Join us in January for a virtual journey to Japan encompassing textiles and culture. Our own Julie Wickware will be our tour guide as she educates us on Japanese culture, beautiful cultural sites, and the International Quilt Show in Toyoko with thoughts and ideas from the quilts on display.
A little about Julie: I am married, have 4 children and 4 grandchildren. I went back to college at age 39 after a 20 year absence and didn’t know if I could do it! I succeeded and became a Physician Assistant spending most of my time in the ICU with the sickest patients and their families. I have retired from full time work and only work contingently now.
Over the past few years I have found that, for me, the need to balance work and play was a must. My outlet has mostly been quilting. I am always ready to learn something new. I also recently began long arm quilting and am continuing to learn this too.
In addition to quilting, I love photography. When in Europe I was able to capture the northern lights and became interested in Astrophotography. I am currently learning how to photograph the Milky Way, no success yet but will keep trying! I have always felt that I need to play as hard as I work which gives me a good balance.
While traveling, I like to photograph the people and details of the places I travel to. It’s fascinating to see how the architecture of the past is reflected in the art and textiles of today.
Some time ago I found Pam Holland, an Australian quilter, photographer and textile artist. She meshes photography and quilting. With her, I have made many friends from around the world.
I have traveled to a variety of countries all unique in their own right. I usually try to meet the people and get a feeling of what their life is like. Most are willing to share their craft as well as their customs. My greatest interest is in textiles as well as local arts. To date I have spent time in Japan, Australia, Ireland, Costa Rica, India and Bali with many like minded quilters and plan on continuing my adventures through travel.
